[INTRODUCTION]

Review and photos by Glenn Schrijvers.

Belgian Metal Shredder went to the SOLD OUT event of Slaughter The Giant in Hell café in Diest. Hell opened its gates in 2019 and is known for a lot of gigs (mostly free), bbq, New Year events, Hell’s market and having a good time with friends with beer and good music. Hell even serves special metal beers from Johnny-Liquor like Motörhead American pale ale, Iron Maiden Trooper IPA, Provectus Lucid Nightmare and many more. Hell even has its own merchandise in collaboration with Shwajn Design. Be sure to check out the website of Hell because there is much more to explore (https://www.helldiest.com/).

The big boss behind Hell is Erik Depooter, a very kind and genuine person be sure to say hello when you visit Hell. Café Hell is armed to the teeth with a stage, big bar, great staff, nice PA (sound installation) and metal decorations like skulls and even a head of a bull (his eyes light even up). The restrooms are very hygienic and there is even a big terrace with umbrellas (free bbq during summers) so, you can guess that Hell is always alive and raising inferno.

[VOLIèRE]

We celebrate the evening with the first band on the list Volière! We saw them at Albatroz few weeks back (you can read my review about that event here https://www.belgianmetalshredder.be/festival/75) and that was one hell of a party! Volière released an album called "Numero Kalk’Uno" and an EP called "Avian Influenza " which consists of chicken pan slamming death metal. Be sure to check them out and support them in any kind of way. The venue was already crowded and there was even a big peacock in front of the stage (an inflatable of course).

Our feathery friends (chickens and a flamingo) were ready to spread their wings of destruction. Jesse unleashes his Cock-a-Toorture screams upon the crowd supported by devastating riffs from Bert and Bart (better known as The Giant) and Johan gracefully playing bass. For an opening act they succeeded to make somebody from the crowd stage dive onto the peacock! The feathery gang joined the crowd for a feather polka with Heidy Grindy Hoe. The bar was set high this evening! Voliére played songs like "Spicey Slambal," "Beep Beep" and "Flying Cletus." They ended their set dancing off on techno beats. I was glad for seeing them back and they didn't disappoint! Only in my opinion they could’ve played as last act of the evening because it would've been the perfect ending of the night.

[HOPE ERODES]

Next up was Hope Erodes who play metalcore at its finest. They released 2 EPs: "Lost to Supremacy (2014)" and "Rainwalker (2019)" (read Stijn Metal Shredder's review here: https://www.belgianmetalshredder.be/reviews/141). Hope Erodes opens with "Waiting for The Fall" and Koen was on fire like always unleashing his raging vocals towards the crowd. Hans blasting his drumming skills through the sit with melodic shredding guitars from Wim and Sven. Let’s not forget Jelle putting it all together on the bass guitar. I noticed even that Sven upgraded his guitar with the Tonepros locking bridge, tailbridge and dome knobs with a Celtic weave in gold! That really was an eyecatcher my fellow Shredders.

Hope Erodes even brought their own smoke machine, it gave an appealingly touch on the set. Koen screaming in the faces of the crowd which made it very entertaining. Jelle even jumps in the audience and Koen jumps on the crowd surfing his way through the venue. What an evening and this was just the beginning. Hope Erodes played also songs like "Otium," "Rainwalker" and "Kriegswaisen. "The crowd headbanged almost throughout the entire set! If you do not know them, go to Spotify or Apple music! Support them!

[PROVECTUS]

Then it was time for some old school black metal from Provectus. They released 2 albums: "Existential Delusion" (2018) and "Postero Mundi" (2022). They played old school black metal with focus on the 90s black metal disconnected from modern influences or other metal subgenres. This time Provectus performed without make-up. Understandable because of the time shortage. "Gloria Dolorem" is the first song and the audience got chills down their spines… you got drawn into their music!

Tempore Anomalia spitting his hellish vocals with earsplitting riffs and Roach headbanging with his lightning-like bass guitar meanwhile, Obitus bashing his way through the set. The highlight for me was "Insania Est Infinitas" because it's my favorite song from Provectus. There's a diabolical melody in it that does not get out of my mind. Provectus also played song like "Prosemper Absentis," "Bane of Existence" and "Disordered Phenomenon." If you're a true fan of old school black metal then Provectus is your poison. Support them or even book them!

[BLEEDSKIN]

Almost halfway through the event and now it was death metal time with Bleedskin. They released an album called "Blood Reign" (2020) and an EP called "The Rotten One" (2018). Bleedskin is a female fronted death metal band from Andenne. They kicked off with "Silence is your Only Way." What a powerful voice from Anouk, she spits her atrocious vocals straight into your skull. The Peacock flew from front to back in the crowd and there was a lot of headbanging as well.

I was amazed by Rémy because damn he is inhumanly quick on the bass guitar without plectrum! Céline's headbanging and shredding riffs with Julien on the background delivering blast beats. Bleedskin’s live performance was a true sight to behold. They played songs like "The Rotten One," "Physical Redemption" and "Bleedskin." If you love death metal then give their music a spin or buy their merch because life is short nowadays.

[WHEN PLAGUES COLLIDE]

Now it was time for When Plagues Collide! They played devastating deathcore and let that be the thing I love the most! When Plagues Collide released an album called "Tutor of The Dying" and an EP called "Shrine of Hatred." They even have a song featured with Misstiq from Earthcaller. When Plagues Collide succeeded in first pit of the night! The crowd gets wild of the infernal vocals of Wouter with the blast beat machine Siebe! The neck breaking riffs from Joris and Santy. Benny from Slaughter The Giant even grabbed Wouter on the balls in the air.

My friends fell in love with When Plagues Collide. It was their best set yet that I have seen live! I even stopped taking photos and jumped into the pit. They played songs like "Elizabeth," "Tears of a King" and a new song "God Complex." If you love blast beats, filthy breakdowns, low gutturals and some squeaky squills then When Plagues Collide is you cup of deathcore. Look them up on YouTube or come watch a show. Support these friendly bunch of misfits.

[SLAUGHTER THE GIANT]

Now the moment we all have waited for, it is time for Slaugther The Giant for their live presentation of their "Depravity" album (you can read the full album review here: https://www.belgianmetalshredder.be/reviews/396) Slaughter The Giant brings blackened death metal to the masses. First song was "Depravity" which unleashed a horde of headbanging metal shredders! Benny’s hellish vocals were on fire as always with Jeroen and Timi providing melodic and headbanging riffs. Joren working his magic on the drums with the company of Daan’s bass lines.

During the song "Compliance" Wouter from When Plagues Collides joined the stage for an epic duo unleashing their vocal mayhem on the audience which resulted in mosh pits, headbanging, crowdsurfers and lots of fun. In the momentum I even stopped taking photos to join the fun. I jumped in the pit and headbanged with the whole front row close to Benny. Benny even jumped into the crowd for a circle of Headbanging! But when he went up stage on of his fingers got lost in my butthole! That was typical for Benny, a true entertainer with a great sense of humor. Benny even stagedived into the crowd and saw the whole venue. There was even a wall of death! Slaughter The Giant played songs like: "Ritual Abuse," "Dark Days" and "Raging Demons." If you haven't already listen to their "Depravity" album then do so and support this awesome band by buying the cd, vinyl or merch!

[FRACTURED INSANITY]

This brings us to the last band of the evening Fractured Insanity. They played technical brutal death metal and released an EP and 4 albums: "The Ethics of Nihility (EP 2006)", "When Mankind Becomes Diseased (2007)", "Mass Awakeless (2010)", "Man Made Hell (2016)" and "Massive Human Failure (2020)." Because the time schedule was later than anticipated a bunch of the crowd had already gone home.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I unfortunately had to leave halfway the set. Nevertheless, Fractured Insanity played a ruthlessly devastating set! The harsh spitting vocals from Stefan while playing bass guitar, Ignace obliterating the drums and Dieter shredding riffs like Satan himself is coming to drag him to hell. If you like your metal served brutal, cold and bloody then Fractured insanity is your main course! Support them in any way you can! Like them on Facebook or, go watch a show and buy merch.

[CONCLUSION]

{The Slaughter The Giant "Depravity" release show was a huge success! All the bands played as if they were the event's headliners themselves! The audience got much for their money’s worth. From headbanging, moshing, crowdsurfing and even a wall of death. It was an epic night in Hell that will not be forgotten! Credits to all the people who helped organizing this event, all the bands, the barkeepers, the security and the crowd.
